The existing museum collection is based on the creations of the Kremlin workshops from precious metals and stones, and on the gifts from ambassadors of other countries. The museum still preserves its historic name of the Kremlin treasury.

Items made of precious metals and stones that were part of tsars' and later museum collection were created by Russian, European and Oriental masters of IV – beginning of the XX centuries. Permanent exhibition includes about 4000 decorative items that have high artistic and historic value. The most impressive items of the museum collection are the tsars' carriages, coronation dress, civil costumes, Monomakh's Cap and other ancient state regalia, ceremonial arms, Fabergé eggs.

Armoury collection includes:

·ancient state regalia,

·ceremonial tsars' clothes and coronation dress,

·robes of Russian Orthodox priests,

·the largest collection of creations of Russian goldsmiths and silversmiths,

·West European silver works of art,

·artistically decorated weapons,

·collection of carriages,

·ceremonial items for horses.
