On the first stage famous architects took part: Vikteberg, Tamanskiy, Melnikov, Voronikhin etc. Realization of the project was begun in the middle of the autumn of 1817 on Sparrow Hills.
The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is the largest in the sphere of Russian church, it can fit 10000 people. The plan of cathedral looks like cross with equal sides. The building was erected in style of Russian-Byzantine architecture. The half of all cathedral murals and domes are gilded. The Cathedral of Christ has also a story of destruction. During Soviet times it was decided to build the palace of soviets and this place. Reconstruction of the cathedral was begun in 90-s of 20th century. Holy Synod addressed to government with a request about reconstruction works.
