History of Donskoy Monastery dates back to 1593. It is dedicated to the Icon of our Lady of Don believed to have saved Moscow from devastation by a Mogol khan.

The Monastery was built on the spot where the Russian army was waiting for the battle against the enemy. Previously there was a small church where people prayed in front of the Icon of our Lady of Don brought from the Moscow Kremlin.

This place has a rich history. By XIX century it became one of the most privileged and wealthy monasteries of the country. Since XVIII it has been a burial place for famous and outstanding people of the time. Nowadays Donskoy necropolis has the graves of Perov, an artist, and since 2008 – the grave of Solzhenitsin, a writer.

Donskoy monastery's mystery and history, as well as its architecture – small and grand cathedral, gates, towers and walls – are really worth a visit. Tour of this famous monastery with an English speaking guide will surely become an interesting and a memorable experience.
