One of the most popular attractions of Moscow is Novodevichy Convent. It stands on the bend of the Moskva river near Luzhniki stadium. The convent was founded in 1524. It is dedicated to the icon of Our Lady of Smolensk (Hodigitria), and it was built to mark the capture of Smolensk. It is interesting that for the first several centuries of its existence Novodevichy Convent was a place for exile of women belonging to the royal family.

This cultural monument was one of the shooting sites of War and Peace movie based on the book by Leo Tolstoy. In 2004 the whole ensemble was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bogoroditse-Smolensky Convent is an ancient and well fortified convent that has been well preserved till our days. It is one of the most visited tourist sites in Moscow. It has a church museum and several permanent exhibitions:
