This estate originally belonged to Kantemir dukes who were associates of Peter I, and later it was purchased by empress Catherine II. She started calling this place a “real paradise”.

For 10 years architect Vasily Bazhenov was working very hard to please his royal customer, but... Catherine II didn't like Bazhenov's work. She ordered to demolish it and build a new palace in its place. The order was given to Bazhenov's disciple – Matvei Kazakov. However, 10 years of construction works finished in nothing again – the empress died, and her son Paul I decided to stop financing the works.
